A great number of higher education institutions cannot operate properly and successfully without the adoption of Student Management Information Systems (SMIS). The main aim of this study was to assess the adoption and diffusion of student management information systems in higher education institutions. The research therefore investigated the level of awareness for student management information systems, the level of use and satisfaction for student management information systems, the benefits of using student management information systems, the challenges of using student management information systems and finally the study suggested ways of improving and have effective student management information systems in higher education institutions. The study was guided by concepts under Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Delone and Mclean Success Model. The study was carried out in four institutions of higher learning and conducted using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study involved the lecturers, students, support staff, and administrators who use and manage the student management information systems in various higher education institutions. The study findings revealed that students, lecturers and support staff are aware about the student management information systems. The respondents find SMIS to be useful since among others they manage student’s records. The respondents however reported that internet connectivity is the major challenge as far SMIS adoption and diffusion is to concern. Finally, the study suggested that in order for higher education institution in Malawi to have a successful student management information system, internet connectivity must be improved, there should be good IT infrastructure and finally, users must be trained how to use SMIS.
